Breadth of the strip Each size of tube produced has a distinct strip width. The strip width is estimated using several characteristics, including the finished tube size, tube wall thickness, desired radius of corners (for square and rectangular tubing), and theoretical molten metal squeeze-out at the weld head.

PAES buys steel coils from primary mills and slits the coils to width on its own slitters. The strip width is limited to 0.020 inches.

Preparation of the Strip An important aspect of getting a good weld is making sure the strip edges are correctly prepped before welding. This is performed by flying over the strip in a sequence of rolls known as fin passes.

As a result, the fin passes are intended to polish the strip edges in preparation for welding and to ensure that the edges are beveled to the right angle to allow the strip edges to join together evenly.

As a result, the strip edges must meet so that there is no gap at the top (outside of the tube) or bottom (inside of the tube).

Welding In electric resistance welding, the strip edge can be heated in two ways. One way is to use contact shoes to induce current into the tube. The contact shoes are copper-based contacts that allow current to flow into the to-be-welded base metal. The contact shoes are placed towards the strip edges, just in front of the weld pressure rolls. A high-frequency induction coil is used in the second method.
